Just rediscovered this in a box in the basement. In 2001, as the Senate correspondent for the Voice of America, I covered an informal press conference by the late Senator John McCain. That’s me sitting in the lower left. I believe the woman next to me is the Post’s Helen Dewar, one of the finest Congressional reporters of those times.
Two dozen years have passed since the photo was taken, and it feels like two centuries. McCain was no saint but he had a conscience, principles, and guts, which except for Mike Pence on J6, damn few Republicans have shown anytime recently. The MGA forces are out to destroy VOA too, but the people who know its value are fighting the good fight to keep it alive.
